What is Marriage? Marriage may be defined as socially approved sexual alliance whose off springs also have social recognition and approval. Diwali - Festival of Lights

Diwali - Festival of Lights:

Diwali means a row of lamps. They are an invitation to Laxmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity. A Diwali lamp is a silent reminder that enlightenment and radiance are the goals of human life. Firecrackers are burst to ward off the evil spirits. An essential part of the festival is the sharing of sweets with relatives, friends, neighbors, and business associates as a gesture of goodwill.

Diwali is the best loved and most universal four-day celebration in India. Different legends are associated with its origin. On the eve of Diwali, Known as Dhana-trayodashi, Rangoli (colored Powder) is used to create colorful patterns in the entryway.

Day1: Narak Chaturdashi, marks the day Lord Krishna destroyed the demon Narakasur and freed the world from fear.
Day 2: Laxmi Pooja, the goddess of wealth is welcomed into all household.
Day 3: Padwa is the day symbolizing love and devotion between the wife and husband.
Day 4: Bhau-Bheej is the day brothers take gifts and sweets to their sisters. The sisters offer prayers for the brothers' longevity and prosperity

FW: Me, Marathi _Good write up by Shoba De(MUST READ)

THIS WOMAN HAS GOT GUTS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Me, Marathi
written by Shoba De

Correct me if I am wrong, Raj... but I consider myself an assal
Marathi manoos. Born in Maharashtra to Maharashtrian parents etc.
Proud to be Marathi (even though my language skills in my mother
tongue are embarrassingly dodgy). I don't know how to make the
perfect puran poli but I do love aamti..

This is clearly not enough anymore. Going by the checklist, I could
be disqualified on several scores. I am married to a Bong, who has
lived and worked in Mumbai for over 30 years (but alas, has not been
appointed ambassador to the state of West Bengal yet!). He attends
Durga Puja regularly and prefers maacher jhol to vangi bhaat.

Fortunately, we don't have a daughter-in-law to name a college after,
either in Kolkata or Mumbai.... And our children (like yours) did not
attend Marathi-medium schools.. We employ people based on their
competence, not caste or region. And I have never asked the vegetable
vendor, breadwalla, taxi driver, dhobi, sweeper, elevator attendant,
security guard, pizza delivery boy or any of the other people who
make my life easier, which part of India they come from.

This is Mumbai, meri jaan! Who cares where anyone comes from? Dhanda
is all that matters.. Mumbai is India 's most powerful magnet. Once
you get here, you never leave. Don't believe me? Ask those innocent
bhajjiwallas and doodhwallas who were beaten up and stoned by your
men last week. Even with blood-soaked bandages around their heads,
and broken hearts, they are staying put. As they should.

Aaah, the natak of your dramatised 'arrest' was not lost on anybody.
Had Rakhi Sawant's slapping stunt not grabbed those eyeballs on
Valentine's Day, viewers would still be stuck with the image of a
nattily dressed you (mmmm...loved the styling), clambering in and out
of the police van. If Rakhi cleverly stage-managed the incident, what
should one say about your brilliant coup? Overnight, Raj Thackeray
was elevated from being the discarded Thackeray to a national figure.
In one well-orchestrated move, you went from being a neglected nephew
of an ageing tiger, to a sharp-clawed, teeth-baring cub with an
independent act of his own. The circus acquired a brand new star attraction — you!

It was never easy being a Thackeray. Ask Balasaheb. If he targeted
south Indians in the '60s, you smartly headed north. Same agenda,
diametrically different directions. By questioning the bona fides of
those who have made Maharashtra their home, both of you tapped into
the vulnerabilities of the average Marathi manoos. It is worth asking
the very people whose interests you are protecting, whether they
really want to do the dirty work currently being handled by the
northies.

Will the Marathi manoos agree to put in 18 hours a day plying taxis,
selling veggies, washing clothes and so on? Who's stopping them from
turning into vendors of milk, food grains, and other commodities?
Perhaps, the Marathi manoos considers such occupations demeaning? The
truth is, these jobs have always gone abegging, and there have been
any number of hungry, unemployed people from other states ready and
willing to grab them. Kick the 'outsiders' out at your own peril, and
see what happens...

Why do farmers commit suicide in such numbers only in Maharashtra ?
The answer, dear Raj, may surprise you.

In your defence, let me say you received the worst press — biased at
best, and shrill to boot. Most of the semi-hysterical reporters from
prestigious news channels were embarrassingly ill-informed as they
blabbered incoherently each time a leaf moved outside the
magistrate's court!

Surely, you are not complaining? Everything seems to be going
according to the master plan. You have 'made it' in one swift move.
And women are finding you kinda cute in that sleeveless baby blue
pullover. Great copy, great photo ops. What more does a neta want? To
keep Mayawati and Lalu out of Maharashtra ? Now, that's a tall order!

FW: READ IT FULLY.......THIS IS A HEART TOUCHING MAIL.........

A boy and a girl were in love.

When the girl's father came to know
about their love, he did not like it at
all, and so began to protest about it.

Now it happened that the two lovers
decided to leave their homes for a happy
future.

The girl's father started searching for
the two lovers but could not find
them .

At last, he accepted their love and
asked them to come back home thru a

local newspaper. Her father said "If
you both come back I will allow you to marry the
guy you love, I accept that you loved
each other truly."

So in this way, their love won and they
returned home.

The couple next day went to town to shop
for the wedding dress. He was dressed
in a white shirt that day. While he was
crossing the road to the other side to
get some drinks for his wife, a car
came and hit him and he died on the spot.

The girl was devastated and lost her
senses. It was only after sometime that
she recovered from her shock.

The funeral and cremation was the very
next day because he had died horribly.

Two nights later, the girl's mother had
a dream in which she saw an old lady.
The old lady asked her mother to wash the blood
stains of the guy from her daughter's
dress as soon as possible. But her
mother ignored the dream.

The next night her father had the same
dream , he also ignored it. Then the
girl had the same dream the next night, she
woke up in fear and told her mother
about the dream. Her mother asked her
to wash the clothes with the blood
stains
immediately.

She washed the stains but some remained.
Next night she again had the same
dream. She again washed the stains but some
still remained. But again the next
night she had the same dream and this
time the old lady gave her a last
warning to wash the blood stain, or
else something terrible would happen.

This time the girl tried her best to
wash the stains, and the clothes
nearly tore, but some stains still remained.

She was very tired.

In the late evening the same day while
she was alone at home, someone knocked
on the door. When she opened the door
she saw the same old lady of her dream
standing at her door. She got very
scared and fainted.

The old lady woke her up... and gave her
a blue object, which shocked the girl.

She asked "What is this...?" The old
lady replied...

BHOSARI ....Connection with MAHABHARATA

Pimpri–Chinchiwad History

BHOSARI .... Connection with MAHABHARATA

One of the very important areas of Pimpri-Chinchwad is Bhosari. Bhosari is what one would call a nickname; the actual name of the city is Bhojapuri. This was the capital of King Bhoj, him being the king that ruled over certain parts of India more than two thousand years ago. Throughout the time of Mahabharata, this particular city was also called Bhojakata. Mahabharata is one of the major Sanskritepics of ancient India, the other would be Ramayana. Bhojakata’s location was west of Kundinapuri which is now the capital of Vidarbha Kingdom. There are many reasons why one would refer to Pimpri-Chinchwad as wonderful but one very interesting aspect of it is that this is where a few famous freedom fighters were born.

The Mahabharata has made the city even more worth talking about as it is one of the world’s longest epic poems. This amazing piece has more than 74 000 versus and approximately 1.8 million words in total. If you include the Harivamsa, the Mahabharata will have over 90 000 versus. This epic poem is of great importance to the culture of Nepal as well as India. The reason this poem is so important is because of the way it discusses and explains human goals and other interesting influences. The discussion happened in an ancient mythological ritual, trying to clarify the relationship of the person to society as well as the workings of karma and the world in general. Mahabharata, if translated into English, simply means “the great tale of the Bharata Dynasty.

Bhojakata was the capital of the city of Rukmi, Rukmi also the name of the king of Vidarbha Kingdom. Rukmi had a sister, her name was Rukmini. Rukmi told his sister that she had to be married by the Chedi king Shishupala. But she would not hear it as she had fallen in love with another man by the name of Vasudeva Krishna. Krishna abducted the woman against her brother’s wishes and that set the king off and he left the capital of Vidarbha to catch Krishna and retrieve his sister, Rukmini. He made a promise to the city, telling his people that he would not return without his sister. After all he tried; Rukmi was defeated by Krishna and his army. But Rukmi, even though defeated, he was a true king and kept his promise by creating a new capital for Vidarbha, this one was to the west of Kundinapuri and it was called Bhojakata. The king, from then never left his new city, he ruled from there and never went back to Kundinapuri. This is how the great Rukmi became the king of Bhojakata.

HEART OF THE MATTER

As the world marks World Heart Day on Sunday, heart diseases and stroke continue to kill 17.5 million people annually. But simple steps like reducing one’s salt intake slightly could save millions of lives, says Umesh Isalkar

Heart diseases and stroke are the world’s number one killers, claiming 17.5 million lives every year. Doctors say that simply reducing one’s salt intake by half a teaspoon daily could help reduce the risk from these diseases, saving millions of lives. A mere three-gram reduction in every person’s consumption of salt would result in an over 20 per cent reduction in deaths from stroke and an over 15 per cent fall in deaths from heart diseases. Risk factors for heart diseases and stroke include high blood pressure, high cholesterol and glucose levels, smoking, inadequate intake of fruits and vegetables, overweight, obesity and physical inactivity. Together, these factors account for around 80 per cent of deaths from heart diseases and stroke. “High blood pressure or hypertension, however, is the single biggest risk factor for heart disease and stroke and currently affects more than a billion people worldwide,” said leading cardiologist Shirish Hiremath, who is the director of the Cathlab at Ruby Hall Clinic. It is estimated that more than 1.5 billion people, or nearly one in three adults over the age of 25, will suffer from high blood pressure by the year 2025. Also, according to the latest study published in leading medical journal ‘The Lancet’, by 2010, India will be home to 60 per cent of the world’s heart patients, Hiremath said. According to Avinash Bhondwe, president of the city chapter of the Indian Medical Association, it is possible to develop high blood pressure at any age and there are no obvious symptoms. The only way to know if you are at risk is through a medical check-up. “By finding out your level of risk, you are taking a simple but significant step towards living a longer and better life,” Bhondwe stated. High blood pressure is usually controllable with lifestyle changes and medication, he added. There are several factors which increase the risk of high blood pressure, such as excessive salt consumption. Cardiologist Shireesh Sathe, who is also the president of the Pune chapter of the Cardiology Society of India, said avoiding foods high in salt (including restaurant and processed food which may be high in salt) and refraining from adding salt could potentially reduce its consumption by three grams a day. “This year, particular emphasis the World Heart Day Foundation is placing emphasis on high blood pressure, or hypertension, which is the most significant risk factor for stroke and an important one for heart disease,” stated Bhondwe. The hidden factor The World Health Organisation recommends a maximum quantity of 5 grams of salt a day, which is about a teaspoonful. This is not a large amount, especially when you consider that 75 per cent of the salt we eat is already present in the food we buy. Therefore, before you assume that you don’t eat too much salt, take a look at what you are buying, as well as how much salt you use at home. Ways to reduce salt consumption t Opt for healthier breakfast cereals, such as puffed wheat, wheat biscuits or muesli with no added salt t Snack on plain popcorn or unsalted nuts and seeds, instead of potato chips. t Go easy with tomato ketchup, soya sauce, mustard, pickles and mayonnaise as these can all be high in salt t When you have a salad, use only as much dressing as you need. Some dressings can be high in salt One of the simplest ways to cut down on salt is to compare foods and choose those which have a lower salt content whenever you can. A quick way to tell if a food is high in salt is by looking at the nutritional information on the label: t High is more than 1.5 grams salt per 100 grams (or 0.6 grams sodium) t Low is 0.3 grams salt or less per 100 grams (or 0.1 grams sodium) (Compiled from www.worldheartfederation.org)
